In the exciting days after a move, safety may not be high on the to-do list. Most people
are more concerned about unpacking and settling in than home security. However, making your home safe for you and your family
should be one of your top priorities.
Here are six things you can do during the first month.
1. Change your locks and look for breaches in
the perimeter, like basement windows or other points of access. If you purchased a home with a security system, contact the
company and find out about restarting the service.
2. Make connections with your neighbors. A network of observant
and safety-minded neighbors can be one of the best defenses. Exchange phone numbers so you have a local contact in the event
of an emergency.
3. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure there is a fire extinguisher
in the kitchen, basement and garage.
4. Talk to your family about emergency escape plans. Remember, a new home
means a new layout and a new plan of action. If you have a second floor, consider purchasing a folding escape ladder.
5.
Get familiar with the area. Make an appointment with a local physician so that if there is a medical emergency you have a
familiar professional to contact. Find the location of the closest emergency room.
6. Create an emergency contact
sheet with important names and phone numbers. Put it with a first aid kit in a convenient location.
